Overview

Declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Sunderbans, in West Bengal, is a vast swampy treasure trove of mangroves and thriving wildlife and flora and fauna. It is the largest Tiger Park in India, spreading over 4264 sq. km. of land. It is home to more than 250 majestic big cats, the Royal Bengal Tiger. Rare varieties of birds like the Mangrove whistler, Masked Fin foot and Mangrove Pita can also be spotted if you are lucky enough. The Spotted Deer, Monkeys, Kingfisher, Heron, Wild Pigs and the White Bellied Eagle have made it their home. The alluring beauty of the Sunderbans is an experience that will linger forever in your mind. The national park is off limits for the tourists however, tourists can visit the wildlife sanctuary for the turtle hatchery, crocodile enclosure, Mangrove Interpretation Centre and a Shark Pond. Since it is not the usual touristy destination, for shopping options Kolkata is the nearest destination with a whole gamut of stuff that you can get from on a Indai day tour to Sunderban.

How to visit:

By road: Transportation is available from Kolkata to reach nearest places to Sunderbans like Namkhana (105-kms), Sonakhali (100-kms), Raidighi (76-kms), Canning (64-kms), and Najat (92-kms), from where, we have to take riverine waterways to reach Sunderbans.

By rail: Local trains are connected to Sealdah (SDAH) train station. At train station, local transport is available, which can drop to Godhkhali Jetty, the starting point of your boat journey to the Sundabans.

By air: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport (CCU) is the nearest airport to reach Sunderban, which is at distance of 112 kms.

By Water: Sunderban are approachable only by riverrine waterways. Boat is the best bet to explore the park extensively.
