Overview

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a shore town situated some 60 kilometers off Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Mahabalipuram was the chief port city during the reign of the Pallavas, over South India between 1st century B.C and 8th Century A.D. This tourist town is famous for its ornate architecture. The picturesque shore temple with the vast sea at the back drop is an example of excellent craftsmanship of the era. Made of granite blocks, this two-towered temple was built in the honour of Lord Shiva. After a few minutes’ walk from the shore temple is the Five Rathas that are reminiscent of the epic Mahabharata tale. There are also a number of shacks near the beach selling mouthwatering local cuisine. While here, a visit to the Krishna’s Butter Ball, popularly called the Balancing Rock, the Seashell museum and the Mamallapuram Light House is a must. The Crocodile bank, just 15 kilometers from Mahabalipuram, on the route back to Chennai is highly recommended. Various curio shops along the beach selling artifacts, sculptures and paintings are a delight.

By road: Regular bus service is available from Chennai (58 Kms), Kanchipuram (65 Kms), Chengalpattu and Pondicherry.

By rail: The nearest railway stations from Mahabalipuram are Chengalpattu (29 Kms) and Chennai (58 Kms).

By air: Chennai airport (MAA) is the nearest airport with both domestic and international services at a distance of 58 Kms. Chennai is connected with all the major cities in India by several domestic flights.
