Overview

Popular for the academic institutions left behind by British, Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand. This is a small restless town perched on the Doon Valley and is a popular pit-stop for travelers on their way to Mussoorie, Rishikesh etc. Worth a stop, Mindrolling Monastery (10km south) is a popular tourist spot for its manicured gardens and the Great Stupa. This stupa is 5-storied (60m) and also one of world’s tall stupas. The narrow streets around the monastery have many Tibetan-run cafes, for a hot relaxing cup of coffee and snacks. Other popular places of visit are Forest Research Institute Museum, Indian Military Academy, Wildlife Institute of India etc. The prime attraction of the Forest Research Institute Museum is the building itself, which is as large as the Buckingham Palace or may be bigger and is an impressive remain of the Raj era. Shopping clothes, souvenirs and camping & trekking gears is a good-deal here that you get on a India day tour to the city.

By road: Dehradun is connected to all the major cities around it and also provides with the smooth rides. Delhi 235 kms, Chandigarh 175 kms, Mussoorie 34 kms, Rishikesh 43 kms

By rail: Dehradun (DDN) is well connected by rail main tourist cities in the country. Daily superfast trains are available on Delhi-Dehradun-Delhi route with high class facilities and services.

By air: Jolly grant airport (DED) of Dehradun is the city airport, however it is not connected to all the cities, so the nearest international airport to visit Dehradun is New Delhi which is around 235 kms.
