Overview

Bodhgaya (in Bihar) is the place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree and became Buddha, almost 2600 years ago. As Mecca is to Muslims, Bodhgaya is to Buddhists. The place attracts thousands of Buddhist Tourists to study, pray and meditate. Dalai Lama often visits this place in between December to January. Numerous monasteries & temples dot the landscape of Bodhgaya and being built as per their national architectural styles by foreign Buddhist communities, these places are a visual treat. Other places of interest for tourists here are Mahabodhi Temple, Vishnupad Mandir, Brahm Yoni, the 80 ft Statue of the Buddha, Buddha Kund, Rajayatana, Chinese Monastery, Lotus Tank, Burmese Temple, International Buddhist House & Japanese Temple, Thai Monastery, Tibetan Monastery etc. Day time excursions to Sun Temple, Hill, Vishnupad Temple, Barabar Caves, Nalanda, Rajgir etc., are also worth the time spent. The place also offers good accommodation facility and as it is a small town, the localities are approachable without much hassle and makes it an easy India day tour to the city.

How to visit:

By road: Bodhgaya is connected by road to Gaya. Regular direct bus services are available by private and Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation from Gaya, Patna, Nalanda, Rajgir, and Varanasi.

By rail: The nearest Railway station is Gaya Junction (GAYA) which is 16 Kms

By air: The Patna airport - Lok Nayak Jayaprakash (PAT) is the nearest airport at a distance of 112 Kms.
