Overview

Founded by the 4th Sikh Guru Ram Das in 1577, Amritsar (in Punjab) is the home to the holiest shrine of Sikhs, the Harmandir Sahib – popularly known as the Golden Temple. This city, like most Indian cities, has an old establishment and a new counterpart. The old city, houses the Golden Temple and several other historic sites. Travelers enjoy exploring the capillary network of narrow streets and hustle-bustle markets with its old-world charm. How to visit:

By road: Amritsar is easily accessible from all the neighbouring states. There is also a bus service to Lahore, 35 km away, which is the only overland connection between India and Pakistan.

By rail: The train station name of Amritsar is Amritsar Junction (ASR), and is connected by direct trains to major Indian cities like Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Calcutta and Chandigarh

By air: Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport is about 11 km. from town. It is connected by domestic flights to Delhi, Srinagar and Chandigarh.
